What exactly does the filling precision of coffee capsules mean?

When purchasing coffee capsule filling machines, we often see the filling accuracy specification: ±0.1g. This means that if the target filling weight is 5.5g, then the weight of coffee powder in each capsule should be maintained between 5.4 and 5.6g. However, filling accuracy is not solely determined by the machine. The type of coffee, the grind size, the packing density, the amount of coffee powder in the hopper, the machine's operating speed, and even the sampling and weighing methods can all affect filling accuracy. So today, let's talk about this ±0.1g.

1. Why is filling accuracy important?

If there is too little coffee powder, it may affect the extraction effect and may also result in a finished product weight lower than required. However, if too much is filled, it will increase the cost of the coffee raw materials and will also affect subsequent filling and sealing. Therefore, a stable filling weight not only affects product stability but also impacts production costs.

While 0.1g may seem like a small amount, imagine a production line producing 100,000 coffee capsules daily. If each capsule contains an extra 0.1g, that would require approximately 10kg of extra coffee powder daily – a significant amount. Therefore, we aim for the weight of each capsule to be as close as possible to the set value.

Most coffee capsule filling machines use servo-controlled screw filling systems to dispense coffee powder. The mechanical principle isn't complex, but because coffee powder is a highly variable material, it can affect filling accuracy.

Firstly, different grind sizes – finer and coarser coffee powders – result in different flow and compaction conditions, leading to greater fluctuations in filling weight. Therefore, filling parameters must be adjusted accordingly when grind size changes significantly.

Secondly, roast level and bulk density also play a role. Dark and light roast coffee, even occupying similar volumes, can have different actual weights. Therefore, even with the same screw parameters, identical filling weights may not be achieved under such circumstances.

Another easily overlooked factor is the amount of coffee powder in the hopper. When the hopper is full, the pressure on the coffee powder at the bottom is not exactly the same as when the hopper is nearly empty, which can also affect filling stability. Therefore, in continuous production, it is best to maintain the amount of coffee powder in the hopper within a relatively stable range using level sensors and an automatic feeding system.

Generally speaking, it is not difficult for a machine to achieve good filling accuracy during short-term, low-speed testing. However, it is more important to confirm that the accuracy can be maintained consistently under normal production speed and continuous operation. For example, if we want to know whether the filling of a four-channel machine is accurate, it is not enough to just look at the average weight of all capsules; we must also check the filling situation of each channel individually. This is because one channel may be consistently heavier than another. Even if the overall average still looks correct, some capsules may actually be outside the target range.

Therefore, in actual production or FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing), a more reasonable method is to take multiple capsules while the machine is running continuously, record the actual weight of each capsule, and record which filling channel each capsule came from.

2. How to Improve Coffee Capsule Filling Stability?

Good filling accuracy depends not only on the machine but also on relatively stable production conditions. We can improve filling stability in the following ways:
  1. Maintain a consistent coffee grind size.
  2. Keep the characteristics of different batches of coffee as consistent as possible.
  3. Keep the coffee powder in the hopper within a reasonable and stable range.
  4. Adjust the screw filling parameters according to the actual coffee.
  5. Do not judge filling accuracy based on only a few samples.
  6. Check each channel of a multi-channel machine separately.
  7. Regularly check capsule weight during production.
  8. For high weight control requirements, configure an online checkweigher.
When there are changes in any step, such as changes in coffee type, roasting level, or grind size, adjust the filling parameters promptly.

3. How to Test Machine Filling Accuracy?

If possible, test the machine with actual customer-produced coffee powder and capsules before shipping the equipment. Set the machine to the actual target weight and run it continuously at a speed close to actual production, taking multiple samples during continuous production. Capsule number, filling channel, target weight, and actual weight are all recorded separately. This allows for a more intuitive assessment of overall weight fluctuations and identifies any significant differences between different channels.

In conclusion:

Don't just look at ±0.1g!

Filling accuracy is a crucial technical parameter when selecting a coffee capsule filling machine, but it's not independent; it's affected by actual production conditions. Therefore, when choosing a coffee capsule filling machine, it's essential to consider your actual production conditions.

At Expak Packaging, we test each machine using the customer's actual coffee, capsules, target filling weight, and actual production requirements. We adjust filling parameters based on real materials and then verify equipment performance under conditions close to actual production. We aim to ensure that each customer can maintain a consistently high filling weight, close to their target value, even when continuously producing thousands or even tens of thousands of capsules.
